Olier, Jean-Jacques

Olier, Jean-Jacques
(1608–57)
   Community Founder and Devotional Writer.
Olier was born in Paris, and was educated at the Sorbonne. Under the in- fluence of vincent de paul, he was ordained into the Roman Catholic priesthood. In 1641 he founded a seminary for priests at Vaugirard. The following year it moved to St Sulpice, Paris, where Olier was parish priest. This was to become a model for other seminaries. It was a community of secular priests sharing a common life, who were dedicated to mission and social reform. In 1657 Olier sent a group of his priests to the new Canadian colony of Montreal to continue their work in the New World.
He was the author of several devotional works including Catéchisme Chrétien pour la Vie Intérieure and Introduction à la Vie et aux Vertus Chétiennes, both of which were influential on generations of clergy.
